Swepos is Lantmäteriet's satellite positioning system. The network of permanent reference stations provides users with navigation support and services for accurate positioning.
Swepos is an important part of the Swedish geodetic infrastructure
Sweden's geodetic infrastructure consists of national reference networks - both reference stations and physically marked points in the terrain - which in various ways give users access to the national reference systems. Swepos is Lantmäteriet's system for satellite positioning in Sweden.
The network of permanent reference stations provides users with naviation support and services for accurate positioning. the opportunity. Data from Swepos can be used in a variety of GNSS applications. A couple of examples are
- real-time positioning for production purposes such as machine guidance
- scientific studies, including the detection of very small and slow movements in the earth's crust, for example land uplift.
We can also monitor the proper functioning of different satellite systems.
A number of the most stable Swepos stations form the physical "backbone" of our national three-dimensional reference system SWEREF 99. SWEREF 99 is based on GNSS observations from Swepos and it is therefore often said that Swepos realises SWEREF 99. An important consequence of this is that it enables a direct connection between modern measurement technology and modern reference systems for positioning.

How does Swepos work?
The permanent reference stations receive signals from the GNSS satellites and forward data to Swepos' data centre. In the data centre the continuous data streams from all stations are collected and quality checked before being used for our services or redistributed to other service providers.
High availability with redundant data centers
To ensure the availability of the real-time Network RTK service Swepos was expanded with another data center in November 2020. This means that all infrastructure needed for the operation of the service is located in two different locations, in a so-called High Availability or HA solution.
Both data centers are normally in operation, with the possibility of redirecting all users to one data center if the other data center suffers from malfunctions or when maintenance needs to be carried out.
Swepos in international collaborations
GNSS support systems exist not only nationally but also internationally. Swepos contributes data to such networks of permanent reference stations.
The international GNSS support systems are used among other for
- realisation of global geodetic reference systems
- geodynamic models, such as land uplift and continental drift
- climate research and meteorology
- time reference.
International fixed reference networks stations
EPN, EUREF Permanent Network (new window) is the European network of fixed reference stations, where Lantmäteriet and Swepos contribute with GNSS observations from about 30 stations.
The global network is coordinated by the organization IGS, International GNSS Service (new window) and includes a number of selected Swepos stations.
